Caption accompanying photograph: Field of rice variety IR8 approaching maturity despite the short and steady growth characteristics of this new variety, the first to be released and named by the IRRI. Average yields of IR8, under careful management in the tropical countries where tested, have been from 5 to 8 metric tons per hectare compared with 2 to 4 tons for local varieties grown under [the] same conditions.
